Question: Should i let my baby nurse on her tummy?
(Posted by: Cheerfully Blessed Duck! on 2008-08-04 14:56:17)
My 10- month- old has figured out that she can turn over and nurse on her tummy if we are on the floor or couch. Should I discourage this? Is this bad nursing manners? The only thing that bothers me about it is that she will slowly scootch forward with her knees under her, and eventually have to let go because she's too far up to nurse. I keep turning her over, back onto her back, but she's really insistent with it! So it ends up being a mock wrestling match with me constantly turning her over LOL! Does your baby do this? What do you do about it? Intead of just saying, "when we are on the floor or couch " I should have said, "when we are ~laying~ on the floor or couch. " When she's tired I always lay down to nurse her so that I don't have to move her when she falls asleep. We have a pad for the living room floor that is comfy for her, and if I nurse her on the couch I will sit on the floor in front of the couch with my laptop. Otherwise she wakes if I move her when she's asleep! :o) |

It really depends on how you feel about it. if it hurts or makes you uncomfortable then you might want to discourage it. Or if your worried that it may not be possible to nurse them somewhere else because of the position required you might want it to not become a habit. But if your ok with it that is what really matters some kids really get crazy and do weird things when they nurse. Here is a good article on nursing manners: kellymom.com/ bf/ older-baby/ nursing-manners.html This one has a section on acrobatic nursing as well: kellymom.com/ bf/ bfextended/ toddlernursing.html#acrobatics |

I say let her. Mine has done that for a while now. Its funny how quick she falls asleep like that. They say you should be care-full for ear infections if they don't sit up but mine has had no problems at all. |

If you're sitting up you're in charge of what position she's in, right? I suggest you don't lie down and not let her get on her stomach as she might swallow a lot of air in the process of forcing the incoming against gravity. |

My almost 10 month old does the same thing, she's an acrobatic eater. I don't do anything, I just play along -- she doesn't try to mess around while nursing when we are out, she keeps still for me, so when she's at home I let her nurse any which way she pleases. |
