What effects: having my baby, nurses pushed head back in while i was pushing?

Question: What effects: having my baby, nurses pushed head back in while i was pushing?

(Posted by: lammarow23 on 2008-11-07 14:08:41)

Ok so this is what happened I was at ten centimeters and had the urge to push so.. I pushed and the nurses seemed to encouraged this until they realized on the second push that the baby's head was already crowning. The next push the babies head would have come out all the way except that they pushed it back in, then held the baby in for the next three pushes. I was watching something the other day that said that might be the worse thing they can do. My son was in the hospital for almost a month with lung issues and his ribcage was oddly shaped. I don't know if there was any connection. I wish they would have just let me have him instead of keeping the baby in. This is my 3rd child and I have a history of having babies after only 3- 4 four pushes. told the nurses this before we even got into hard labor but they where not used to seeing an induced labor with no drugs so.... Please let me know, I don't want to call the hospital and let them know what happened until I have some more info. OK so when I asked for an explanation the nurse said the doctor had to be in the room? I think I'm remembering correctly, I was extremely aware of what was going on. I didn't think that the rib cage thing was related but I thought I would ask. I had a question on how I dealt with the pain? I think I might have a higher pain tolerance than most people because I have been exposed to intense pain most of my life due to a chronic illness.

I would of kicked those nurses away from my vagina. i don't know what caused your baby to be so sick, but this doesn't sound right. i am no medical expert, but i know you are not soppose to push it back in.

I honestly didn't even know someone could even do that, but regardless it doesn't sound right and you should definitely look into it.

I thought the whole point of being in LABOR was to get the baby OUT, not push him back IN?! I would've smacked those nurses, wow. That doesn't sound right at all.

I am sure there's reasoning behind it. She wouldn't hold him in for no reason. Sometimes our memories or perceptions are altered during labor. I would speak with your OB to get clarification about what happened. There's no point in getting upset over something that was probably totally normal. As for the lung issues and the odd shaped rib cage that wouldn't have anything to do with a baby being inside you for three extra pushes. Sorry. I know you are trying to find an explanation for what happened but sometimes babies are just going to have issues.

They may have had a reason, but they should have explained it to you. I can not think of any reason for them to do this unless they were just plain not ready for baby to come yet, still they should not have done that. Did they tell you not to push? I know there is really no stopping the urge sometimes. I would definitly bring this up to the hospital and demand an explanation, and ask for procedure in certain situations. First ask for any reason for a nurse to do this, then tell your story and demand answers cuz they will deny deny deny if they think there was any wrong doing. My husbands grandather died is surgery from neglectfull anesthesiologist. The hospital denied he was working that day, and the guy resigned a week later. Also, I labored 4 23 hrs, pushed for 4 hours with 1 using the vacuum. All the time my sons arm was tucked behind his back so he would not come out. They also had the vacuum on the wrong part of his head and has a permanently misshapen head. Not as bad as it sounds. Just when you look down at his head it is not evenly round. They pushed him back in (which was more painful that trying to push him out!!!!!) and wheeld me in for a c-section. He had a massive bruise filled with water on the beck/ side of his head that took 3 months to go away. The doctors said he was in great pain and had to be on tylenol for a week. Damn doctors.

OMG, is this real?! If this is serious...get a lawyer and sue their asses. i'm sure if you talk to someone knowledgeable and not trying to cover their asses, they would tell you pushing the head back in very well could be the cause of your ds's problems. poor baby!

I think you need to ask your OB/ Gyn why the nurse would do that. I would make a formal complaint to the hospital. But I don't think that would cause those issues.

Wow that is crazy! And that is bulls*** if they said that it was because the doctor had to be in the room. My grandmother has worked in the laboring unit for 10 years and shes delivered more babies then you could count. There is no way that the the reason. Oh and also when my mother was in labor with my middle brother the nurse also delivered him because her doctor didn't even make it to the hospital sooo... Unfortunately women deliver there own babies in bathrooms and crap without problems...I would definitely be pissed.
