Question: Baby nursing while mom is pregnant again?
(Posted by: Mommy of 1 baby and 2 puppies! on 2009-03-23 05:54:13)
How well did your baby nurse once you were pregnant again? My husband and I are going to start trying and my son is and will still be nursing while I am pregnant. However he is already a big 9 1/ 2 month old Will he self wean early due to a growing belly? |

Hi, I havent been through this myself, however i have heard a lot of people say that their child nursed throughout pregnancy. I have also however heard people say that their child self weaned when they became pregnant. Either way your son will be happy as long as you let him decide what to do. Im assuming hes eating plenty of solids now anyway so if he weans himself he will still be getting nutients. Im sure you know it, but bear in mind it can be more difficult to get pregnant while breastfeeding so dont be surprised if it takes a while. |

I know one thing, it's not good at all to breastfeed while pregnant, your milk is not as good, not to mention that your pregnancy hormones will change the chemical formula of your milk. I suggest you stop breastfeeding immediately and give your body a break, you need all your energy for your new baby. |

My son is almost 16 months and I am 12 weeks pregnant, he still nurses very often and isn't showing any signs of weaning. Just a warning, if you had sensitive nipples the first time around prepare for some painful nursing sessions. No matter how well my son latched on, it felt like my nipples were being cut of with a rusty blade. I don't know if you have read anything off kellymom.com/ bf/ tandem/ index.html but there is some good info. Also get in contact with your local LLL, they have lots of info and first hand experience with nursing during pregnancy and tandem nursing. |

It's not the belly that sometimes deters them, but rather a change in the quantity and taste of your milk. When I got pregnant I kept right on nursing, but almost right away my supply decreased. My daughter (who was about 18 months old at the time) would nurse for a few minutes and then ask "off side? " (other side?). She seemed a little confused as to how there was so little in there! Eventually she'd ask that twice and I'd have to remind her she'd already had the "off side! " We weaned (it was self-weaning with a teeny nudge from me) about a week ago. I would just suggest that you keep your nutrition at an optimal level and get plenty of water. Maybe I could have kept my supply going longer if I'd done a better job of that--I don't know. It is definitely possible to nurse through a pregnancy and then tandem nurse, but it didn't happen for me. Some babies will be discouraged enough to self-wean when the milk supply drops, and some will keep on nursing for comfort. I agree with the previous answerer that there was increased soreness, but mine didn't start until the second trimester (weird, huh?). I guess everyone is different. Also, another weird thing is that nursing in the first trimester made me feel BETTER rather than worse when I was feeling nauseous. I think I may be in the minority there, though. Good luck, and I hope your doctor is supportive. |
